Out of the Mouth of Babes

Marianella Casasola *

Associate Professor, Human Development

College of Human Ecology, Cornell University

********************************************************************************

How do infants organize the world?  Does experience with a particular language influence how infants perceive their environment?  Join Professor Casasola as she explores the relationship between thought and language in infants and how language helps shape the way in which children make sense of their surroundings.  Specifically, learn how infants from both English-speaking and Korean-speaking environments make connections between objects, based on the language they are learning.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Professor Casasola’s research offers insight into children growing up bilingually and shows how language plays an important role in the cognitive development of infants.  In recognition of the contributions she has made thus far to both research and teaching, Professor Casasola was recently awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers by the White House.

* Marianella Casasola, Ph.D.

 Dr. Casasola is a native of Los Angeles, CA and attended Marlborough School for girls where she developed a strong interest in development. She continued to explore this interest as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley where she majored in Spanish Literature and Psychology. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. She researches infant cognitive development and early word learning and teaches courses in developmental psychology and research methods. Cornell University is her first faculty position. Last year, in recognition for her contribution to both research and teaching, she was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers by the White House which honors the most promising researchers in the nation within their fields.
